Learn the Easy Ways to Drive a Manual Car
Driving a car with a manual transmission is particularly difficult esp. to those who drive an automatic car. It is a known fact that a manual transmission car has a third pedal which is the clutch. The clutch is a handle that is used to shift gears.
What is the difference between the manual transmission car and the automatic transmission car? You use both feet to control the car when you drive an automatic transmission car while you only need your right foot to operate the manual car. Also, the manual cars have shift gears from the first gear to the fifth unlike in automatic car – the driver has the options to drive, park and reverse. All you have to do in the automatic transmission is to step on the gas pedal and the rest is done for you.
The first thing you should do is to familiarize yourself with the car that you will be driving. You should know what and where the essential parts of the manual car are located. You need to be familiar with the gearshift (used for shifting gears), clutch pedal (used for shifting gears), brake pedal (used to stop the car), accelerator (used to move the car forward), and steering wheel (responsible for maneuvering the wheels.
Here are some tips on how to drive a manual transmission car:
Before you start the engine, be sure to buckle up your seat belt. See to it that the gear shift is in the neutral mode so you can be able to push down the clutch pedal to the floor then turn the key to start the vehicle.
Now that the engine is in neutral and the clutch pedal is down the floor, slowly move the gear from the neutral to the first gear – move it upwards. Gear shifts have visual representations of its movement according to the gear number.
As your car is already in the first gear, slowly release the clutch pedal as you slowly press down the accelerator pedal – do this simultaneously. You have to have timing otherwise the car will choke. As you sustain the movement, press down the clutch and shift to higher gears so it will increase speed. Practice, practice and more practice.
As you are making a progress with the car, and you decided to bring the car to a stop – just slowly release the accelerator pedal and press down the brake pedal. Press down the clutch pedal and put the gear shift into neutral. If you want the car to start moving again, move the gears.
Manual transmission cars have more power and better gas mileage that is why many people prefer to drive a manual car. You should have lots of patience and practice so you can drive a manual car. Learning to drive a manual transmission car is like learning the principle of using its different parts. It takes time and practice to master the skills in driving a manual car but once you understood its essential parts, and you will have enough practice on safer grounds – driving a manual car is just a piece of cake.
